St Joseph’s Home for Chronically ill Children

Description

St. Joseph’s provides compassionate, multidisciplinary intermediate paediatric care to medically fragile children, ensuring they receive the treatment, rehabilitation, and support needed to recover and thrive. As the only facility of its kind in the Western Cape, it serves as a vital link between acute hospital care and home-based recovery, addressing a critical gap in the healthcare system.

With a 175-bed capacity, St. Joseph’s welcomes children with life-limiting and life-threatening conditions such as cerebral palsy, infectious diseases, traumatic brain injuries, neurological disorders, and cancer. The organisation’s holistic approach includes medical oversight, rehabilitative therapy, and psychosocial support, helping each child regain independence and improve their quality of life.

St. Joseph’s operates on the principle that financial barriers should never prevent a child from accessing essential care. All services are provided at no cost to families, ensuring that children from disadvantaged backgrounds receive the same high-quality treatment as those with greater resources.

A multidisciplinary team—including doctors, nurses, physiotherapists, occupational and speech therapists, social workers, and dietitians—works collaboratively to create individualized care plans. Beyond physical recovery, St. Joseph’s recognizes the emotional and psychological needs of young patients, offering trauma-informed care, play therapy, and family support programs.

Founded in 1935 by the German Pallottine Sisters, St. Joseph’s has nearly 90 years of experience in paediatric healthcare. It continues to evolve in response to changing medical needs, ensuring children receive the best possible care. The organisation relies on donor funding, corporate partnerships, and government support to sustain its life-changing work, advocating for accessible, high-quality healthcare for all children in need.
